Johnson
Ranch owner[1] in New Mexico Territory in 1878. (October 6, 1814 – April 14, 1884).[2]
In July of 1878,[2] Bret Maverick was traveling[1] through New Mexico Territory[2] from Clayville to Silver Springs. While in Clayville, he had been duped into buying a "full-blooded Arabian mount" that turned out to be a female camel named Fatima. After several failed attempts to sell Fatima in Clayville, Bret came across Johnson's ranch along the trail to Silver Springs. Like the others to whom Bret had tried to sell, Johnson had no interest in keeping a camel. Bret finally bribed Johnson to simply take Fatima off his hands.[1] With one hundred dollars of Bret's money, Johnson didn't worry too much the next day when he discovered Fatima had broken loose from his corral and had disappeared into the desert.[2]
