jolly roger
Flag of piracy on the high seas in the 18th and 18th centuries.[1]
Traditionally composed of a skull and crossbones against a black field. The crossbones were sometimes substituted with a pair of crossed swords.[1]
The Wrecker: In December of 1871,[2] Bart Maverick negotiated with Captain Nares in chartering the Norah Creina to take him to Midway Island to salvage the Flying Scud. Nares drove a hard bargain, pushing Bart's offer up to a 35-percent share of the salvage profits. Afterwards, Bart remarked in good humor that he wouldn't be surprised if Nares flew the jolly roger.[3]
