Kansas State Penitentiary
Prison established in Lansing, Kansas, in 1861.[1]
Originally known as Petersburgh, but was referred to colloquially as Kansas State Penitentiary. The prison was officially renamed Lansing in 1875, but retained its informal appellation.[1]
According to Hoyle: After Samantha Crawford won thousands of dollars from Bret Maverick with an obscure rule of Hoyle in 1876, Bret confronted her to learn why she had targeted him alone with her legal poker trick. Samantha told Bret it was because he once cheated her father, George Cross, out of $50,000 in a poker game and to cover his losses, Cross had embezzled his bank's money and was then serving time in the Kansas State Penitentiary until such time as his stolen money was repaid. However, Cross was not Samantha's father, nor was he serving time in prison. He had hired Samantha knowing with her feminine charm, she could get away with using the obscure rule of Hoyle, to exact revenge against Bret.[2]
