Kittredge
Professional gambler in 1876.[1] (June 8, 1828 – June 2, 1897)[2]
A cordial and honest gentleman, Kittredge was one of five poker players in a game with Bret Maverick and Samantha Crawford aboard the Delta Star en route to New Orleans He On a returne trip to St. Louis aboard the Stonewall Jackson two nights later, he banked a game with Bret and Samantha. When Samantha invoked a little-known rule of Hoyle against Bret disallowing starights in five-card stud poker, Kittredge defended Bret's hand, based on his years of poker playing and knowledge of the game. However, Bret honored the rule, once he confirmed it from the riverboat's copy of Hoyle's Games.[1]
