Lake Hotel
Hotel in Loma Parda,[1] New Mexico Territory, in 1876.[2]
In April of 1876, Bart Maverick and Daisy Haskell took rooms at the Lake Hotel while traveling together by stage from Santa Fe to Laramie.[2]
Earlier in the day, the stage on which they were riding was attacked by a band of Comanche. Before leaving Santa Fe, Henrique Fillipe had insisted Bart take his Winchester carbine for protection along the trail. While using it against the Comanche, Bart noticed something peculiar about the rifle's balance. Later, when alone in the room at the Lake Hotel, Bart examined it and discovered a secret compartment had been hollowed out of the Winchester's stock.[2]
Afterwards, Daisy entered the room to head for the washroom where Bart had paid the attendant to prepare a hot bath. Bart argued that he should have the bath first, since he had paid for the hot water, but compromised with Daisy in a cut of the cards. When they both drew a king, Daisy decided she had won and took the first bath.[2]
