Louisiana Purchase
Former French territory in North America, bought from Napoleon Bonaparte by the United States by Thomas Jefferson and established on July 4, 1803.[1]
Named for the Louis XIV, King of France," meaning "Land of Louis." First attributed to the territory drained by the Mississippi River when claimed for France.[1]
Hostage: In April of 1879,[2] Creole aristocrat Henri Devereaux bickered with his daughter Yvette about the flaws of the American people. Yvette stated that she believed her father still resented that he had not been consulted about the Louisiana Purchase.[3]
