Mayor
Mayor of Hallelujah, New Mexico Territory in 1876.[1] (July 31, 1820 – December 19, 1878)[2]
A quiet, peaceful man who was fond in believing "there is a little good in the worst of us."[1]
In September of 1876, Cliff Sharp robbed the Hallelujah Wells Fargo office of $40,000 and killed its clerk. Sheriff Chick Tucker's posse found Bret Maverick asleep in a hotel room in nearby Elbow Bend with evidence incriminating him for the crime, After Bret's trial, the Mayor and the rest of the town council visiting Bret in jail to convince him to reveal where he had hidden the stolen money, but to no avail. When the Mayor met Molly Sharp — in town claiming to be Bret's wife and that "Bret Maverick" was just an alias used by her husband Cliff — he offered to use the $1,000 bill from Bret's coat to build a better jail as a monument to her husband. After Bret and Molly returned the stolen Wells Fargo money, the Mayor was very apologetic for the trouble the town had put him through. He saw to it that Bret's name was cleared, that he was paid $5,000 for the return of the money and returned his $1,000 bill. The Mayor was insistent that Molly should stand trial for something, but wasn't sure what. He did, however, accept money from Bret to make sure she had a good lawyer.[1]
