Natchez Herald
A newspaper in Natchez, Louisiana in 1870.[1]
The paper's nameplate was emblazoned with an engraving of a steamboat.[1]
War of the Silver Kings: When Bret Maverick arrived in Echo Springs, he wished to give a hotel clerk the impression that, despite his dusty and trail-weary appearance, he had money and was worthy of respect and accommodations. Finding a copy of the Natchez Herald on a lobby table, he cut four slices of newsprint the size and shape of his single $1000 bill from it with which to pad an envelope. Before the hotel clerk's eyes, he removed the actual $1000 bill from the envelope and asked the clerk to deposit the ersatz "$4000" in the hotel safe. [1]
