Palace Saloon
Saloon and gambling house in Prescott, Arizona Territory, opened in 1868.[1]
One of the oldest and finest saloons on Whiskey Row, and stocked with choice liquors of every kind.[1]
The Long Hunt: On November 29, 1877,[2] Bret Maverick began playing poker with an ever-changing rotation of poker players. Two of them were Rex Clark and Whitey Brandon. While other players came and went, Clark and Brandon became regulars at Bret's table. After a week of playing with them, he realized that they had been two of Lefty Dolan's three partners on a bank robbery they committed in May of 1872 in Dry Springs, in which a teller had been shot and killed.[3]
A fire destroyed the Palace and most of Whiskey Row in 1883. The Palace was rebuilt, intended to be fireproof. However, another Whiskey Row fire destroyed the Palace again in 1900. The persistent owner rebuilt the Palace yet again, more resplendent than ever. The saloon has survived to the present day, undergoing a major renovation in 1996 to bring it back to it's 1901 appearance.[1]
