poker player

Poker player[1] in Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory in 1877. (December 15, 1844 – September 10, 1912)[2]

In February of 1877,[2] on the evening of agreeing to Lefty Dolan's dying request to get Jedd Ferris out of prison, Bret Maverick was playing poker in Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory. Distracted by the inclination to stay out of the problem, but wrestling with his conscience over an innocent man serving a life sentence, Bret could not concentrate on his game. In a round of poker, the poker player asked Bret if he was betting, and Bret folded. The opener held only a pair of kings against the poker player's two pair. He remarked that Bret had taken two cards and asked if he had been holding a kicker. But Bret showed he had been holding three nines, which would have beat the poker player's hand. As he scooped in his winnings, the poker player shook his head and admonished Bret for not paying attention. When Bret moved to step away from the game, the poker player was disappointed that such a rube as Bret was quitting the game.[1]
