poker player

Poker player[1] in the Palace Saloon, Prescott,[1] Arizona Territory, in 1877.[1] (October 20, 1837 – July 8, 1907)[2]

An experienced, left-handed poker player, he sat down to a game with Bret Maverick, Rex Clark, Whitey Brandon and another player[1] in December of 1877.[2] He bought in with $500 and was asked to deal. He remarked that since he was dealing, he couldn't complain if he lost. Bret said he could complain, but there would be nothing he could do about it. Clark quipped "Yeah. Like the bank robber said to the cashier." The joke was one of the first clues Bret had that Clark was one of Lefty Dolan's partners in the bank robbery in Dry Springs five years earlier. When the poker player began dealing, Clark asked if his left-handed deal reminded him of anyone. Brandon remarked that it did, but Dolan dealt faster. Bret immediately realized they were taking about the man who had died asking Bret a large favor.[1]
