"The Jeweled Gun" marked the first solo adventure of Bart Maverick, though it was not written as such. The script was written in August of 1957, before Jack Kelly was brought on to play Bret's Brother Bart. The filming of the episode, though, didn't begin until October, shortly after Kelly had been cast. Having originally been written for James Garner's Bret, the script was revised slightly to include Bart appearing only in the opening and closing vignettes. A last-minute scheduling change pushed the story over to Kelly, and the script was revised again to switch Bret into the short opening and closing scenes.[2]

Due to the 1960 Writers Guild of America strike, the script of "The Jeweled Gun" was re-tooled to become the Warner Bros.' Hawaiian Eye first-season episode, "Dead Ringer." The part of Bart was re-written for Robert Conrad's Tom Lopaka, who was hired by Dianne Foster's Lola Richmond to pose as her husband and accompany her into Macao, China. Rather than carrying a jeweled necklace and derringer as Daisy Haskell did in "The Jeweled Gun," Lola was smuggling a valuable art object. She had murdered her real husband and was planning on doing the same to Lopaka.[4]
