Rinehart, Isaiah[1]

Sheriff in Cimarron, New Mexico Territory in 1876.[2] (October 9,[1] 1839[3]December 27,[1] 1893[3])

Appointed as sheriff of Colfax County with jurisdiction over Cimarron on March 8, 1876.[2]

The Jeweled Gun: In April of 1876,[1] Daisy Haskell and Bart Maverick, posing as Daisy's husband, John Haskell, arrived by stage[4] in Cimarron and took rooms at the St. James Hotel.[1] Snopes, a former groom for the Haskells in Philadelphia, saw Bart and Daisy register at the hotel as Mr. and Mrs John Haskell, but recognized that Bart was not Daisy's real husband. When Bart left the hotel to find a poker game in town, Snopes approached Daisy in an attempt to blackmail her to keep her secret. Rather than drawing the blackmail money from her valise, Daisy pulled her jeweled derringer and threatened Snopes with it. Snopes attempted to retreat but went for his gun to protect himself, and Daisy shot and killed him. Shortly afterwards, Sheriff[4] Rinehart[1] investigated the shooting with his deputy. Believing Daisy's story that Snopes had tried to steal her jewelry, her feigned sobbing drew compassion from the sheriff. He apologized to her for her trouble in his town and complimented Bart on his "brave little wife."[4]
