sand lizard
Common species of lizard indigenous to North America. Also known as the sagebrush lizard.[1]
Stage West: At the Packsaddle Station[2] in July of 1875,[3] when he believed he'd been double-crossed by Bret Maverick, Simmons expressed his surprise by saying, "Well, I'll be a three-toed sand lizard."[2] Sand lizards have five toes, so Simmons' remark colored the reference with a handicap, much as he felt by Bret's apparent betrayal.[3]
