scuttlebutt
Nautical slang for gossip.[1]
So called after a ship's scuttle butt, the lidded cask of fresh water for daily use, around which crew would gather and converse.[1]
The Wrecker: In December of 1871,[3] Bret and Bart Maverick let word out around the docks of San Francisco that they were looking for crew members of the Flying Scud, who had all dropped out of sight. Jamie Craven had heard scuttlebutt that the Maverick Brothers were will to pay for such information and arranged to meet Bart in a waterfront dive on the Barbary Coast. Bart paid Craven[2] $100[3] for the name of Jerome Braus, a supposed crew member of the Flying Scud living at the Squarerigger Hotel.[2]
