Shane
Train robber[1] in Wyoming Territory in 1871. (August 21, 1844 – April 13, 1872)[2]
In 1871,[2] Shane stole $60,000 of Wells Fargo treasure[1] and a pouch of U. S. Mail[2] from a train[1] in Wyoming Territory. Even though the crime was committed in Wyoming, the mail theft landed him in the newly built Montana Territorial Prison.[2]
Before Shane was captured, he gave the Wells Fargo money to his wife, Mary. He promised her he would serve his full sentence and return to her. In the meantime, she was to hide out somewhere far from the scene of the crime and wait for him with the money.[1]
While in prison, he met fellow inmate Felton, who convinced Shane they should break out together. In the spring of 1872, Felton killed a prison guard and the two convicts escaped. Shortly after their prison break, Felton killed Shane and continued on alone to White Rock, Texas, where he knew Mary Shane to be hiding out with the Wells Fargo money.[1]
