Shanghai
Major port city in China, situated in the Yangtze River Delta on the East China Sea. The name is Chinese for "Upon the Sea."[1]
Due to its often-assumed location on the opposite side of the globe, it was commonly referred to in America as one of the farthest points to which one might travel.
The Jeweled Gun: In April of 1876,[3] Bart Maverick and Daisy Haskell traveled by stage[4] along the Santa Fe Trail[3] with a cattleman and barbed wire fence salesman. The salesman boasted he expected to sell enough barbed wire to stretch all the way to Shanghai.[4]
