Sheriff
Sheriff of Vermillion, Dakota Territory,[1] in 1877. (October 26, 1826 – March 1, 1912)[2]
In June of 1876,[2] two men robbed the Wells Fargo office in Vermillion of $40,000. The sheriff and his posse killed one of them and pursued the other man[1] across the Missouri River into Nebraska,[2] but lost his trail.[1]
In April of 1877,[2] Bret Maverick and Dandy Jim Buckley rode into Vermillion and introduced themselves to the sheriff. Bret told the sheriff he and Buckley had found the stolen Wells Fargo gold dust behind some rocks near Twin Peaks and would like to turn it in for the ten-percent reward. The sheriff was proud to meet two such upstanding citizens and took them directly to the Wells Fargo office to claim their reward.[1]
