Stanley
Resident of Hallelujah, New Mexico Territory in 1876.[1] (November 11, 1830 – November 2, 1887)[2]
In September of 1876, Stanley witnessed the escape of Cliff Sharp robbing the Hallelujah Wells Fargo office after killing the clerk. Stanley testified against Bret Maverick, captured for Sharps' crimes, at the trial as an eye witness and — in a saloon wagering pool — bet ten dollars that Bret would tell where the Wells Fargo money was hidden before the hanging. He attended Bret's hanging and was playing cards with Sheriff Chick Tucker in the sheriff's office when Bret rode back into town disguised as his own twin brother.[1]
