Tempest, HMS
British man-of-war patrolling the Pacific Ocean[1] in 1871.[2]
In February of 1870,[2] the HMS Tempest[2] came upon the castaways[3] of the Currency Lass[2] on Midway Island. The castaways convinced the crew of the man-of-war that they were the survivors of the shipwreck of the Flying Scud and were taken to San Francisco.[3] In December,[2] under agreement with the Commission and Bret Maverick, the Tempest[3] sailed from San Francisco back to Midway Island to retrieve Brother Bart. Bart and Paul Carthew had escaped the murderous threats of the Norah Creina's Captain Nares on Midway and took to the open sea in the Flying Scud's jolly boat.[3] The Tempest[2] came across the boat four days out from Midway, rescued Bart and Carthew and returned to San Francisco without continuing on to Midway.[3]
