Twin Peaks
Dual pinnacles [1] in the bluffs along the Nebraska side of the Missouri River[2] near Vermillion, Dakota Territory[1] in 1877.[2]
One of the landmarks on Dandy Jim Buckley's treasure map to $40,000 of buried Wells Fargo gold dust.[1]
Following his map, Buckley found the site[1] in April of 1877,[2] but discovered the town of Whiskey Flats had been built in the Mountain Meadow beyond the Twin Peaks since the map had been drawn, and the town jail had been constructed directly on top of the buried gold dust. Returning later in the month with Bret Maverick, Buckley retraced his trail to the Twin Peaks, allowing Bret to believe he had never been there before.[1]
NOTE: Though depicted as rugged, snow-capped mountains in the episode, such pine-studded mountains do not exist within hundreds of miles of Vermillion (see Wild Cards in Stampede).[1]
