Utah Central Rail Road
First railroad in Utah Territory, other than the main line of the transcontinental railroad. Built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to connect Salt Lake City with the transcontinental line in Ogden City. The Utah Central Rail Road was incorporated in 1869. Construction began in Salt Lake City on May 17, 1869 and was completed on January 10, 1870. Passenger service began on January 12, 1870.[1]
War of the Silver Kings: In 1870, Richard Bixby traveled to Utah’s territorial seat[2] in Salt Lake City[3] to appeal the case of the Silver Lady Mine vs. the New Hope Mining Company to Utah Territory’s probate court.[1] The route would have taken him from Echo Springs to Ogden City on the Union Pacific Railroad. He would have switched to the Utah Central Rail Road for the final leg of his journey to Salt Lake City.[3][4]
