Washington, District of Columbia

 

Capital of the United States of America.[1]

 

Situated on the Potomac River. Federal district established on July 16, 1790 by the Residence Act and named for George Washington, first President of the United States and Columbia, a poetic name for America commonly used in the late 18th century. Headquarters of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the republic.[1]

 

 

The Thirty-Ninth Star: On July 4, 1876, the Capital City Hotel desk clerk[2] in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory,[3]  read a newspaper and bemoaned the news from Washington did not mention the statehood bill.[2]
