Businessman in San Francisco, California,[1] in 1871. (February 26, 1819 – December 14, 1868)[2]
A member of the Ring.[1]
In December of 1871,[2] Merchison sat in a four-day poker game with Bret Maverick at the Hotel Bossert, during which time Bret extended him credit in the form of an IOU. Shortly after Bret introduced Campbell to Brother Bart, Bret made a proposition to the members of the Ring at the table that if he won the hand he was currently playing with Longhurst, he would tear up the IOUs from Campbell and the others in exchange for membership into the Ring. Campbell tactitly agreed and when Bret won the hand, he left the game as Bret tore up his IOU. The next morning, Campbell was present during Bret bidding against Thomas Bellairs for the wreck of the Flying Scud at auction.[1]
